leaving before dying. >> reporter: pope benedict xvi announced his resignation and threw the church inteun certainty. the 85-year-old pontiff said he's no longer strong enough to fulfill his duties, saying strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which has in the past few months really deteriorated in me. >> it's remarkable to me in this day and age that he would step down. >> reporter: remarkable and shocking, because no pope has stepped down for 6 centuries. the decision is being hailed as historic and a potential game changer, making it okay to resign. now a billion catholics worldwide are left wondering who their next leader will be. >> the biggest question is where they will come from? will it be an italian pope, a

way to school. none of the students on bus were injured. police say the roads were icy at the time of the crash. baltimore police say a city social worker was beaten, tied up, and dragged into her basement before her house was set on fire. >> it's a shocking new development from what was already a suspicious house fire. brian cuber joins us with the latest. brian? >> reporter: police say a city social worker was killed at the hands of a hand she met on an online dating site. monky carter is charged with first degree murder for this unbelievable story. he is accuse of beating the victim up and striking her over the head and tieing her one cables before drag her to the basement and setting the house on fire he then stole her car

in tonight's health alert, encouraging news about the teen birthrate. the number of 15 to 19-year- olds having babies dropped by 19% last year. the decline is likely because of an emphasis on counseling and better contraceptives. >> these kinds of contraceptives keep kids from getting pregnant. they're safe in teens. that's the new news over the past few years.

during a late night phone call after more than 45 years as you the penn state head coach. the university of pennsylvania said he covered up years of abuse by jerry sandusky. the wife of the legendary coach recalled her actions. >> horror. disbelief. it is still hard to accept. >> reporter: penn state tapped former fbi director louie freeh to investigate who knew what and when in sandusky's dealings with the young boys. he found that paterno knew what happened and covered it up. but the paterno family came out swinging. >> much was misrepresented in the report. >> reporter: so the paternos launch their own investigation and found there was no evidence that he knew after anything

owl stuck in her grill. she hit the owl and thought it would be rode kill. she didn't note the bird until the next day. an officer came and opened the hood, freeing the bird. the bird was actually not injured. and now meet queen victoria, the mascot for the dorns minor league hockey -- for the condors minor league hockey team in california. she escaped and caused some problems on the ice. she will be in the penalty box tonight. we'll have details on today's address from the mayor coming up. >> and candidates are expected to run for baltimore county
